Bert & May x Fired Earth: The beauty of Medina

Bert & May x Fired Earth: The beauty of Medina

Working together, Bert & May and Fired Earth wanted to pay homage to this evocative period of intricate design in architecture where much emphasis was placed on the use of colour and tessellating patterns.

Combining Fired Earth’s timeless aesthetic with Bert & May’s more contemporary edge, Medina has drawn inspiration from the architecture and colours found in Moorish design in the traditional tile-making regions in Southern Spain and Morocco. Known for its elaborate and vibrant tilework, horseshoe arches, geometric shapes and plasterwork patterns, Moorish design has left behind some of the greatest works of architecture in Spain, as well as some of the only works of Islamic architecture to be found in Europe.

What is zellige?

Our zellige collection is meticulously handcrafted from a unique blend of Moroccan unfiltered clay. Each tile is individually molded, fired, glazed with natural pigments, and then fired again before being cut and shaped by skilled artisans known as Maâlems. These artisans craft every tile to be one-of-a-kind, giving each its own distinct tone, texture, and charming imperfections that enhance the tile's natural beauty.

What to expect?

Ordering extra tiles is essential to ensure you have enough for cuts and any unexpected breakages. We recommend planning for at least 15% additional tiles, or even up to 30% to allow for selecting pieces that best suit your final layout and incorporate natural variations. However, we encourage embracing the unique imperfections of each tile, rather than excluding them.

Imperfections - pits and dimples

Variation in colour and tone

Irregular shape and depth

Traditional craftsmanship

These artisan craftsmen use special tools like a small hammer and a chisel to carefully cut the tiles into precise geometric shapes, such as arches, diamonds, and other traditional patterns.
